St. Andrew's Society of SWFL, Inc. Awards Scholarship for Scotland Study to FGCU Student
FOR MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University and St. Andrew's Society of SWFL, Inc. in Naples recently announced the awarding of a scholarship for study in Scotland to FGCU student Andrea McCrary.
The St. Andrew's Society of SWFL established the scholarship to expose a young person to life in Scotland and to learn about its history and culture. They have partnered with the FGCU International Services Office to make this opportunity available for a local student to study in Scotland.
Don McGee, president of St. Andrew's Society of SWFL, and members of its board of directors have provided the impetus for the scholarship program. "This is an exciting opportunity for us to select and support a student with great interest and enthusiasm who will not only learn about Scotland directly, but will bring this experience back to our area to share with others," McGee said.
FGCU's International Services study abroad program assists students to enhance their degree study and broaden their global perspectives through such programs. "FGCU greatly appreciates the partnership with the St. Andrew's Society of SWFL in providing this unique educational opportunity for our students to expand their learning by immersion in the history, culture and contemporary events of the world," said director of International Services Elaine Hozdik.
McCrary will participate in a creative writing program held at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland this summer. She majors in Communications and English, and is an active student leader with the Eagle News, Creative Writing Club and the Honors Program. She is interested in the Scottish perspective on the art of creative writing.
While studying in Scotland, McCrary anticipates attending several of Edinburgh’s famous festivals, including the Book Festival. "I am very blessed to have found such a wonderfully philanthropic group who is aiding me in the cost of my visit to the beautiful land of Scotland," McCrary said.
"I am very thrilled and eager to encounter the amazing scenery, intellectual stimulation, and enriching culture that await me there. I hope to bring my experiences back with me to the United States and share the Scottish culture with my peers, family and community."
