Media Invited to FGCU's "Veterans Recognition" Special Event
FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University CampusVeterans Organization, Equal Opportunity and Diversity Advisory Committee, and Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance invite the media to the third annual Veterans Recognition Day event, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 10 in Student Union 214, in recognition and appreciation of students, faculty and staff who have served and continue to serve in the military during wartime and peace in any division of the U.S. Military.
In fall 2007, members of the EEO-Diversity Sub-Committee on Multicultural Events and Outreach recommended that the University recognize students, faculty and staff who had served or continued to serve in any branch of the U.S. Military. Since the initial event, the FGCU CampusVeterans group has formed and now coordinates the annual salute to veterans.
The program includes the presentation of colors by Estero High School ROTC group; keynote speaker Albert H. Linden Jr., past National Commander, Disabled American Veterans and Adjutant, Disabled American Veterans, State of Florida; special presentations to FGCU veterans and sponsor; and a luncheon will provided for FGCU attendees with a reservation and special guests. FGCU professor Irvin D. S. Winsboro, chairman of the Equal Opportunity and Diversity Advisory Committee, will facilitate the event.
RSVP by Oct. 30 is required by calling Mary Reed at (239) 590-1050.
Founded in 1919, Armistice Day evolved to be known as Veterans Day. Approximately 5 percent of FGCU active faculty and staff are veterans who serve, or have served in the U.S. Military.
