FGCU Bower School of Music Students Win Top Prizes in State Competition

FORT MYERS, FL - Three piano students at the Bower School of Music at Florida Gulf Coast University won top state honors in the Music Teachers National Association Competition (MTNA) on Saturday, Nov. 6 in Bradenton, Fla. The MTNA Competition is considered the most prestigious and rigorous national competition for students.

Senior Hyae-jin Hwang won First Place in the Young Artist Division (ages 19-26). Freshman Priscila Navarro won First Place in the Senior Division (ages 15-19), and freshmen Paul Wright and Priscila Navarro won First Place in the Piano Duet Division.

All three students are from the piano studio of professor Michael Baron, head of Piano Studies at FGCU.

The students will now compete in the Regional Competition against the winners of nine states in Columbus, Ga., Jan. 15.

"I am very proud of all three students," said Baron. "Through talent and diligent work these young artists are on their way to having brilliant careers in music. They are representative of the level of serious music study taking place at the Bower School of Music."

Robert Thayer, interim director of the Bower School of Music said, "The outstanding achievements of these three young musicians are testaments to their talent and diligence. We are proud of them. We also recognize the high quality of teaching being provided by Michael Baron and other members of our faculty."
