FGCU's Office of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Invites the Public to Community Engagement Day, April 15

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University's Office of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement is hosting the 2011 Community Engagement Day on Friday, April 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Alico Arena, to showcase FGCU's largest-ever student service-learning projects.

Service-learning is an educational experience designed to meet mutually identified community and university needs. It is integrated in the classroom for an enhanced understanding of course and discipline content.

Service-learning is a reflective activity that increases knowledge and skills, and provides an enriched learning experience that contributes to personal and career growth. It facilitates civic engagement and responsibility through reciprocal learning and sensitivity to cultural, economic, and social differences.

More than 300 students will present their work with over 60 nonprofit and governmental community partners. The event will culminate with an award ceremony to recognize exemplary service.

Keynote speaker is Genevieve Piturro, founder of the Pajama Program, which provides new pajamas to children living in orphanages, group homes and shelters around the country. The local chapter, led by Lizzie Golumbic, serves the Shelter for Abused Women and Children, Youth Haven, Children's Angel Network, Immokalee Childcare Center, and Our Mother's Home.
