FGCU wins national award for sustainability efforts
5/2/2012

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University's exceptional environmental stewardship has been recognized with a national award.

Second Nature and the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment selected FGCU as one of 10 academic institutions around the country to receive the third annual Climate Leadership Award. The honor is presented to Climate Commitment signatory schools that demonstrate unparalleled innovation and leadership in promoting a sustainable future.

Award winners will be recognized in June at a Climate Leadership Summit at American University in Washington, D.C.
"This recognition for our commitment to the environment and our innovative approach to sustainable practices is truly an honor," said FGCU President Wilson G. Bradshaw. "The Climate Leadership Award recognizes the work of the entire FGCU community as, together, we strive to be good role models and stewards of the environment."

Second Nature, a nonprofit organization based in Boston, is the lead supporter of the Climate Commitment, an agreement among nearly 700 colleges and universities to promote sustainability through teaching and action.

As part of the award selection process, FGCU in partnership with Planet Forward produced and submitted a video (posted here) that details its specific sustainability efforts. Planet Forward is an online forum for ideas related to energy, climate and sustainability.
