Dr. Greg Tolley is Professor of Marine Science at Florida Gulf Coast University and Director of FGCU's Coastal Watershed Institute. He is a former recipient of the Knight Fellowship in Marine Science at the University of South Florida, where he received his doctoral degree in 1994. Tolley has worked to secure over $8 million in grants and contracts and is the author of publications on estuarine ecology, deep-sea fishes, and fish physiology, as well as on novel approaches in science education. Tolley has mentored both undergraduate and graduate students and has taught courses in oceanography, estuarine ecology, ichthyology, and biogeography. His current research interests include the influence of freshwater inflow on estuarine ecosystems, the physiology of estuarine organisms, and the role of oysters in creating essential fish habitat. A Certified Fisheries Professional with the American Fisheries Society and a Member of the American Institute of Fisheries Research Biologists, Tolley chairs the Advisory Board of the Florida Institute of Oceanography, serves as FGCU's campus coordinator for Florida Sea Grant, and is a member of the Conservation and Research Advisory Committee of The Florida Aquarium. As a founding faculty member at FGCU, Tolley was instrumental in developing the marine science curriculum. As Director of the Coastal Watershed Institute, he has worked to expand FGCU’s ability to address environmental issues of regional concern by focusing university research on coastal ecosystems and the conservation of marine and estuarine resources.
