Where Are They Now?

"I work in the Fisheries Independent SCUBA Assessment Group where I perform research on nearshore recreational fisheries in Southern California. I found out that I wanted to do fisheries research after spending years identifying oyster reef critters at CWI for Dr. Greg Tolley. CWI also taught me that marine science can be dirty, but very rewarding. During my work at CWI I was given the opportunity to attend a conference and be named as a co-author on a published paper. This will no doubt give me a leg up when applying to grad school. I am forever thankful to the great people that make it happen at CWI!”

“The work I am doing is mainly to mitigate sound sources that can potentially impact protected species with particular concern for the sperm whale. On a daily basis I conduct mainly visual observations for protected species for clients within the seismic and oil industries. Working for the Coastal Watershed Institute helped me realize that laboratory work was not for me. I looked forward to and thoroughly enjoyed working on field days out in the oyster reefs. This is why I chose a job that included travel, field research, a hands-on working environment, and the opportunity to do things that I would have never thought possible.”

“My experience with CWI was awesome. Though I only worked with CWI for my senior year, I'm very thankful for the opportunity. It helped broaden my knowledge within Estero Bay, as well as many others within SW FL. This has increased my understanding of current environmental issues and problems, while protecting resources and working with the general public on a daily basis. In addition, the experience literally opened the door to my current position by organizations networking with one another throughout our local area.”
