WHAT IS A SPORT CLUB?

A Sport Club is formed by a group of FGCU students motivated by a common interest and desire to participate in a specific sport activity.  The club exists to promote and develop skills, engage in competition, encourage peer leadership, and enjoy the recreational and social fellowship of a specific sport.  Absolutely any student may join a club at anytime without the risk of being cut or dismissed.

Sport Clubs are unique because all the organization duties are performed by the club officers which consist of a President, Vice President and Treasurer.  They raise their own funds, they schedule their own practices and hire their own coaches/instructors.

They are not to be confused with NCAA sports or intramural teams. Some clubs are highly competitive and some clubs are just recreational. Generally, the nature of the Sport Club is dependent on the student officers that run it.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SPORT CLUB AND A STUDENT ORGANIZATION?

A Sport Club is a student organization but with the added benefit of having another Department and professional staff member dedicated solely to helping them out.

Benefits provided by Florida Gulf Coast University to registered student organizations that are Sport Clubs, include, but are not limited to:

  • Regular use of University facilities: buildings, grounds, services.
  • Ability to request funds from the Sport Club Council, Student Government and/or its designated  student organizations.
  • Access to the staff and resources of the Sport Club Office and the Office of Campus Involvement
