Gerry Segal brings the unique credentials of a university professor of entrepreneurship, green business consultant, and successful entrepreneur. After receiving the BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida and the Master of Commercial Science from Rollins College, he embarked on a successful entrepreneurial career. He first started a commercial real estate brokerage and property management firm.in Atlanta. Later, he founded two leading-edge natural food stores.
Columbine Market, an award-winning organic food store in Fort Collins, Colo., was one of the largest and most successful markets of its type at the time. Friendly Street Market in Eugene, Ore., an innovative and very unique organic food market, also became a great success.
Gerry acquired a Ph.D. in Management from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. He is on the faculty of Florida Gulf Coast University Department of Management, where he teaches courses dealing with entrepreneurship, green business, Permaculture and environmental sustainability. Numerous refereed academic outlets have published his research. His recent refereed articles and proceedings have focused on sustainability education.
Viewing sustainability as the key issue of our time, Gerry received his Permaculture Design Consultant certification during the summer of 2008 and has taken advanced and teacher certification permaculture courses since then. Gerry teaches several courses in the sustainability area, including University Colloquium (IDS 3920), Permaculture and Forest Gardening (IDS 3304), and Sustainable Business Management (MAN 3781). He currently is a faculty advisor for the FGCU Food Foresters student organization.
Gerry has been an avid organic gardener for 30 years. He currently has a 3600 square foot garden behind his home in Naples, which serves as a community garden for ten families
