Dr. Rottig is an Assistant Professor of Business Strategy and International Business in the Management Department of the Lutgert College of Business. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Strategic Management with emphasis on Global Strategy and International Business, an MBA degree in International Business, an undergraduate degree (German Diploma) in Business Administration with the triadic emphases on International Economics, Finance, and Marketing, and a Diploma in International Studies. His doctoral dissertation “Institutional Distance, Social Capital, and the Performance of Foreign Acquisitions in the United States” was awarded the 2009 Richard Farmer Best Dissertation Award of the Academy of International Business, and was a runner-up in the Barry Richman Best Dissertation Award competition of the Academy of Management’s International Management Division in the same year.
His research focuses on the institutional and cultural environments of multinational corporations, the performance determinants of international acquisitions, as well as on social and ethical issues in organizations around the world. He has received several awards and award-nominations for his scholarly work from leading academic institutions, including nominations for the Academy of Management's SERI Best Paper in Strategy/ International Business Theory Award and the Douglas Nigh Best Paper Award. He has won the William Ziegler Best Paper Award from the Academy of International Business Southeast USA Chapter in two consecutive years and was runner-up in another year. His research is published in such journals as Decision Sciences, Management International Review, the European Journal of International Management, the Journal of Teaching in International Business and International Business: Research, Teaching and Practice and four of his papers are published in the Academy of Management's Best Paper Proceedings. He has further presented more than 20 research papers at leading academic conferences, including the Academy of Management, the Academy of International Business, the Southern Management Association, the Decision Sciences Institute, and the Southeast USA Chapter of the Academy of International Business.
He currently teaches Business Strategy and International Management in the Lutgert College of Business and he has taught courses in Global Strategy and Policy, International Business, Global Business Operations and Strategic Management at the undergraduate, MBA, Executive MBA, and Accelerated MBA-levels at California State University, Long Beach and Florida Atlantic University. He is actively involved in the academic community and has served as president and executive chair of the Academy of Management's New Doctoral Student Consortium and currently serves as a director on the executive board of the Academy of International Business Southeast USA Chapter (AIB-SE) and as co-chair for AIB-SE's 2011 annual conference. He is a member of the editorial review board and an active ad-hoc reviewer for a number of leading academic journals and conferences, which shows in the form of several Best Reviewer Awards from the Academy of Management and the Academy of International Business.
Prior to beginning his career in academia, he worked for such companies as Merrill Lynch in the US and ING Group in Europe. He also served as chairman of a German student business consultancy while studying for his undergraduate degree, and he embarked upon an entrepreneurial venture as co-founder and consultant of a Germany-based company. He is an invited member of several honor societies, including The International Honor Society of Beta Gamma Sigma, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, The National Scholars Honor Society, and Golden Key International Honour Society. He was born and raised in Germany and, while studying and working in the fields of strategic management and international business, he had the opportunity to travel extensively and visited more than 30 countries.
