Having Problems with your Computer?
Here are some common issues you may be experiencing.
I can’t connect to the internet.
- Do you see a notification that your network cable is unplugged next to your system clock? If yes please check the following.
- Make sure the network cable is securely plugged into the computer and wall jack (secure means that you hear a click when you plug it into the jack).
- Check for blinking lights (Connectivity Lights) on the back of your computer where the network cable plugs into your computer.
- Try a different network cable.
- If there are no lights, call the Helpdesk (239) 590-1188, and inform them that you do not have any “Connectivity Lights”.
I can’t connect to the wireless in my dorm.
- Wireless is not available in all dorms. In North housing only the following building have wireless: Honors, Falcon, Sandpiper, Egret, Pelican. All of South housing will have wireless connectivity.
- If you see a wireless network and you are not in a building equipped with wireless, someone has set up their own wireless access point. Computing Services unfortunately cannot support a non “FGCU supplied” wireless network.
My computer is running very slow since I have moved in.
- This is could be caused by having multiple antivirus programs installed on your computer. If you installed McAfee that was supplied by FGCU when you already have an anti virus program installed, then you will need to uninstall one of the programs in order to have your computer function. It is important to keep your antivirus running smoothly as well as up to date.
- It is possible your computer may have spyware. This is a very common issue, to read more about spyware see the "Get Secure" section under Students. FGCU does not offer any spyware software to students, however there are many reputable and free programs available to you. Programs such as spy bot and ad-ware are both very good products. Try running one of the programs to clean spyware off your computer. (Computing services is not liable for any issues the programs may cause to your PC.)
