Excellence in Civic Engagement



Excellence in Civic EngagementStole

The Office of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement will recognize up to 10 graduating seniors each semester that greatly excel in their engagement and service to their community by awarding them an “Excellence in Civic Engagement” stole.  Students will complete the application process (details below); those selected will be given their stoles at a special ceremony, and then proudly don their stoles at FGCU’s Graduation Ceremony.   Please bring hardcopy applications to the Office of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (4th Floor Library 458I) by the end of the day (5pm).  Electronic applications will not be accepted.
Fall 2015 deadline to turn in application is Friday, November 6th by 5pm
Application must include: 

vComplete listing of Service projects completed and approved while enrolled at FGCU (can be obtained from our records in Banner if student does not have copies of verification forms).


vTotal number of hours served (our office will verify total #):


ØFirst-Time-In-College (FTIC) students will need a minimum of 400 hours served to be eligible.


ØUpper level transfers will need a minimum of 200 hours served to be eligible.


ØStudents completing their Graduate degrees will need a minimum of 200 hours served during their time in graduate school to be eligible.


vA 500 word essay that provides the following information:


ØPlease describe one or more of the sustained service-learning projects (minimum 50 hours) in which you worked to make a difference and meet the confirmed needs of a community partner. Share your specific contributions that impacted the organization or community and what substantial change occurred as a result of these contributions. 


ØPlease explain how this service-learning experience is closely connected to your education and growth as an individual at FGCU. 


vOne (1) letter of recommendation/support from a community partner, where the student served in a sustained manner, sharing the student’s commitment, strengths, specific contributions, and impact on the organization or community.


vOne (1) letter of recommendation/support from a member of the FGCU faculty or staff who has knowledge of and supports the student’s service to their community.  

Please note that internships or paid positions are not approved or counted as service by Florida Gulf Coast University’s Office of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement and therefore cannot be counted as sustained service for this application or award.To see the guidelines for service, please visit
