We are an independent, tax-exempt, voluntary health agency dedicated to fighting lung disease. We strive to prevent and control such lung diseases as asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, lung cancer, tuberculosis and other chronic lung problems. Formerly the Tuberculosis Association, then the Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association, we are now the American Lung Associatioin. This organization is the oldest voluntary health agency in the United States, founded in 1904. We are an affiliate of the American and Florida Lung Associations; therefore a portion of local funds go toward state and national programs an research. The American Lung Association office in Fort Myers covers the Lee, Charlotte and Collier county area.

Volunteer Opportunities: Mrs. Claus has a Cause - Deliver a holiday anti-smoking message to elementary school students Flu and Pneumonia Awareness Campaign -Help us emphasize the importance of immunizations or assist at community flu shot events Asthma Education Program - Help educate children, families and adults with asthma Tobacco-Use Prevention Programs - Become a Freedom From Smoking facilitator for adults or get involved with tobacco coalition or youth anti-smoking activities Fundraising Support-Assist with special events such as the Silent Auction, Rummage Sale and Bike Trek Speakers and Spokespersons- Speak on topics related to lung health and address the local media as a spokesperson Legislative Advocacy - Support legislation related to clean air and lung health through phone calls, correspondence/personal visits to legislators, and identify smoke-free restaurants for publication Regional Council and Board Membership - Become a member to help direct and implement programs and fundraisers in our community Air Quality Programs - Help plan and implement community-based activities designed to increase public awarness on air quality issues.
