The concept of Lifeline Family Center Maternity Group Home developed over several years. As vice president and housing director for a maternity home for six years I was continually frustrated by the knowledge that what we were primarily teaching our residents was how to use the system; AFDC, food stamps, HUD, Medicaid...the whole nine yards. I wanted to help these young women but somehow felt I was sentencing them to a lifetime of poverty. I also ached when a 14 year old chose parenting over adoption because she had a fantasyland concept of parenting. Lifeline Family Center is designed to provide a safe, positive, learning haven and home for young mothers-to-be in a time of crisis pregnancy. The Program provides a shelter, necessary prenatal care for the baby, and important job training skills for the mothers. Each girl receives counseling to help her develop a life-plan and goals for her future. |
