Details: HOSTS stands for Helping One Student To Succeed. HOSTS is a structured academic mentoring program for language arts which provides individual help by using community and student volunteers to mentor children. HOSTS is the only learning system referred to by name in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Each student's learning needs are carefully diagnosed and the student's strengths and areas to be developed are noted. An individualized lesson plan is then designed by the HOSTS instructor for each student. The plans are placed in easy-to-use student folders that direct the mentor and the student as they spend time together in shared learning experiences.
Job Description: The Mentor's Role (minimum one 30-minute session per week between the hours of 7:55 and 2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday) -Work with the student on the lesson plan given by the teacher. Follow the directions - Record meaningful comments on the lesson plan. - Be positive, friendly and supportive of your student so he/she can feel good about what he/she is doing. -Ask questions and discuss concerns with the HOSTS instructor. -Be faithful in attendance. -Enjoy the experience!

Additional Information: In independent research studies, average gains of students in the HOSTS program often are more than twice the national average. The program has won many prestigious awards and has been designated as an exemplary model by the U.S. Department of Education. When used as recommended, HOSTS has had a profound effect on reducing the problems of at-risk students.
