Octagon Wildlife Sanctuary

County: Charlotte, Collier, Lee, Other
Categories Animals
Details:

Octagon is a no-kill, no breed, non-profit sanctuary for abused and abandoned exotic and wild animals. We are a "retirement home" for circus animals, privately owned exotics and other animals that were confiscated for various reasons by Florida Fish and Wildlife, USDA, Police Departments, etc.. Our main goal at Octagon is to let these beautiful animals live out the rest of their days in comfort, cleanliness, and security. Octagon is staffed with about 35 or so volunteers and we rely soley on donations to survive.

Job Description:

There are various levels of tasks that are performed on a daily basis at Octagon. Depending on the skill set, commitment and comfort level of the volunteer, they may be trained to chop and feed out produce to several animals which would include but not limited to bears, birds, donkeys, McCaws, iquanas, raccoons, and more. There are opportunities to be trained on cleaning enclosures (age permitting), and general maintenance of the property such as raking, weeding, weed-eating, cutting grass, triming trees and bushes, cleaning aviary and pond area (where the donkeys and geese reside), as well as moving sand to replenish enclosures (age and comfort level permitting). There is also a need for delivering brochures to businesses throughout our counties, as well as fundraising opportunities for ongoing projects. There is always much to do at the sanctuary and volunteers make that happen.

Additional Information:

Volunteering at Octagon is a unique opportunity to contribute to the well being of these beautiful animals that for most of their lives were abused in some fashion. Some more severe than others. It is also a wonderful experience to be able to interact (from a safe distance) with exotic animals. We care for a large array of lions, bears, birds, tigers and smaller animals. We are also a credited site for Community Service requirements students may need. Octagon volunteers work hard for the animals, but it is such a rewarding experience knowing their lives are now safe and cherished. A life they truly deserve.
