About Convocation

Mission

[ad. F. convoquer, ad. L. convoc re to call together; f. con- together + voc re to call.]

To gather the University Community for welcoming and celebrating our new students as they embrace FGCU's mission and values in their journey toward academic excellence. This mission is guided by the Convocation Assumptions and Principles.

Assumptions and Principles

University
The FGCU Convocation has a clearly defined mission and set of goals.
The Convocation mission, goals, programs, and activities are consistent with the FGCU vision, mission, guiding principles, and strategic plan, and will be reviewed and assessed periodically.

Convocation programs and activities reflect best practices supported by research and evidenced in convocations nationally.

Undergraduate Experience
Convocation and Commencement are two significant academic "bookend" rites of passage for FGCU undergraduate students, which are designed to maintain academic coherence and to reflect the students' progression through the undergraduate experience, from admission to graduation and the community of FGCU alumni.

Convocation marks the beginning of the journey toward academic excellence and community involvement, where the success of all students is central.

Convocation is a celebratory event honoring FGCU's heritage in ways that affirm tradition and innovation. At the same time it introduces students to the University's mission and undergraduate learning outcomes.

Convocation recognizes the diverse needs of students and parents and sets the stage for students to assume responsibility for their education and behavior in the academic community.

Campus Community
Convocation welcomes all students into a community that embraces diversity.

Convocation programs and activities are planned and implemented by a diverse group of faculty, administrators, staff, and students representing the FGCU community. This provides a unique opportunity for faculty, administrators, and staff to work harmoniously together and thereby models a sense of community and collegiality.

It is essential to include Student Government and other student leaders and representatives in the planning and implementation of Convocation, welcoming new students to the FGCU community.
