Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace One School at a Time
Greg Mortenson's dangerous and difficult quest . . . is not only a thrilling read, it's proof that one ordinary person, with the right combination of character and determination, really can change the world. -- Tom Brokaw
Mortenson's mission is admirable, his conviction unassailable, his territory exotic. -- The Washington Post
Each year, FGCU faculty and administrators look forward to celebrating the importance of each student's educational journey with the New Student Convocation. On August 23th at 2:00 PM, in Alico Arena, students, parents, and the University community will gather to formally acknowledge our new students as they begin their academic career. Convocation is a keynote to the launching of a student's college experience. New students and families will not want to miss this history-making event! Student Convocation is a first of many educational experiences that will cultivate and enhance your connection with the university.
All incoming first year students at Florida Gulf Coast University will read Greg Mortenson's Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace One School at a Time in order to explore FGCU's Learning Goal Community Awareness and Involvement. Mortenson's title comes from a Baltistan proverb: "The first time you share tea with a Balti, you are a stranger. The second time, you are an honored guest. The third time you become family." This tale describes the way in which Mortenson builds schools in rural Pakistan and Afghanistan, overcoming enormous cultural divides and fostering peace. The book broadens our understanding of community and provides depth to our notions of civic engagement and involvement.
