Environmental Stewardship Advisory Council 

Reporting:

  • The FGCU Environmental Stewardship Advisory Council will serve in an advisory capacity to the FGCU President.

Mission & Purpose:

  • The mission of the Environmental Stewardship Council is to foster proactive environmentally sustainable policies, approaches, and practices by the campus community, consistent with FGCU's mission, guiding principles, and student learning goals and outcomes.
  • The purpose of the Environmental Stewardship Council is to:
    • develop and maintain a strategic plan of environmentally sustainable goals, objectives, and action plans based on approved policies and practices and consistent with the University's mission, guiding principles, and policies; and
    • formulate, review, and recommend environmentally sustainable policies and practices consistent with the University's mission, guiding principles, and policies; and
      foster environmentally sustainable approaches and practices throughout the University community consistent with environmental policies and the Council strategic plan.
  • The Environmental Stewardship Advisory Council shall:
    • formulate, review, and recommend environmentally sustainable and fiscally sound policies and practices for approval.
    • develop and maintain a strategic plan of environmentally sustainable goals, objectives, and action plans consistent with approved policies and practices for review, adoption, and implementation by all appropriate constituents.
    • work collaboratively with student, faculty, and staff members of the University community in committees and teams to foster environmentally sustainable approaches and practices consistent with environmental policies and the Council's strategic plan.
    • work collaboratively with the University's Office of Planning and Evaluation to evaluate progress on environmental policies and the Council's strategic plan.
    • appoint students, faculty, and staff as necessary to task force groups to address objectives and to implement action plans.
    • submit an annual report to the University President and community evaluating progress on environmental policies and the Council's strategic plan.
    • work collaboratively with community agencies and other organizations for the attainment of mutually agreed upon goals.

Meetings:

  • The Environmental Stewardship Council shall meet on a quarterly basis.
  • A standing time for the Council meetings will be determined at the Council’s first meeting.
  • More than two unexcused absences per year will disqualify a Council member and will result in automatic request by the Council for the University President to appoint another representative.
  • The agenda will be distributed to all Council members one week prior to each scheduled meeting.
  • A quorum of greater than 50 percent of Council membership is necessary for action.
  • Summary minutes of each Council meeting are to be electronically posted for availability to the campus community.
  • Guests are welcome to attend as non-voting visitors.

Membership:

  • Composition of the Council will be as follows:
    • 5 Faculty Members – shall be appointed by the University President from a pool of qualified, interested candidates proposed by the University’s Academic Deans.
    • 4 Staff Members – shall be appointed by the University President from a pool of qualified, interested candidates proposed by the University’s Staff Advisory Council (SAC). One member must be from the University’s Physical Plant, or Facilities Planning departments.
    • 2 Student Members – shall be appointed by the University President from a pool of qualified, interested candidates proposed by the University’s Student Government Association.
    • 2 Community Members – appointed by the University President from community environmental and related agencies and organizations.
  • Terms of office for Council members will be 2-year terms. Initial appointments will include 1 and 2 year staggered terms.
  • The Chair of the Council will be elected by Council members, for a 1-year term, with the ability to be re-elected.
