Life Safety

Fire ExtinguisherIn the month of January, FGCU Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) conducts fire drills in each of our campus buildings.

Fire drills are required to be performed periodically in all facilities as per NFPA 101 4.7 and Florida NFPA 1 - 10.6.  Florida Gulf Coast University conducts fire drill annually in owned and leased buildings.

Building occupants must vacate building in an orderly fashion when the fire alarm signal is given, and not return to buildings until the San Carlos Fire Department gives “all-clear” to re-enter the building.

Fire Drill Guidelines

Ø   Drills shall be conducted during the month of January. No prior notification shall be given to any specific building as to a specific date and time.

Ø  Environmental Health and Safety shall notify President’s Office, Campus Police, Physical Plant, Provost Office, Office of the Vice President of Administrative Services, Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs and Office of the Vice President of Advancement of forthcoming drills.  At that time EHS should be notified of any possible conflicting events and adjust the drill schedule accordingly.

Ø  The activation and deactivation of the fire alarm system will be performed by Physical Plant personnel preceded by either verbal or radio communication to Campus Police that a drill is being conducted.

Ø  Members of EHS, Campus Police, Physical Plant, and San Carlos Fire Department shall conduct a search to determine compliance with these provisions and the functionality of the equipment.

Fire Drills Tips

Tips on things you must always do when entering a building:

Ø  Know where the exits are in a building, notice at least two exits.

Tips on things you must do if a fire or other building emergency were to occur in a state building:

Ø  Call Campus Police at 590-1911 immediately.

Ø  If the fire alarm signal is not audible or visual, pull the nearest fire alarm pull-station to warn others of a fire.

Ø  Do not re-enter a burning building.

Ø  Remain calm and walk to nearest exit.

Ø  Do not keep doors open in a room because the fire can spread.  If possible, close door to room or doors in hallway.

Ø  Once outside, stay at least 300 feet away from burning building.

Ø  Elevators will not be working during a fire so use exit stairwells to exit building.

For those students, visitors, and faculty and staff that are disabled, please ensure that you:

Ø  Contact Adaptive Services to notify them of the buildings that you will be working or studying so emergency responders know your location in case of an emergency.

Ø  Know the building where you will be working or studying so in the event of fire you can await rescue at a safe location.

Ø  Have instructors or co-workers inform Campus Police and fire department of your location while waiting for rescue.

Ø  Elevators will not work in the event of fire; seek refuge by going to stairwell or exterior landings to await rescue.
