Ph. D. in Biomedical Engineering

Dr. JAMES (JIM) SWEENEY is Chair of the Department of Bioengineering & Software Engineering in the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering (WCE). Dr. Sweeney received the Sc. B. in Engineering (Biomedical Engineering) from Brown University in 1979 and the M. S. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 1983 and 1988, respectively. Prior to joining FGCU in August of 2006, he was an Associate Professor and Director of the Flinn Interdisciplinary Graduate Training Program in the Harrington Department of Bioengineering at Arizona State University (ASU), where he now holds Emeritus Faculty status.  Dr. Sweeney served as Interim Dean of the WCE from July to November of 2012.  He is currently Chair of the FGCU Council of Chairs.

Dr. Sweeney is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He was the 2009-10 Program Chair and 2010-11 Division Chair for the Biomedical Engineering Division (BED) of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). In addition, Dr. Sweeney is a member of the Biomedical Engineering Society, and the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. His research interests include bioelectricity, bio- and environmental sensors, neural stimulation, cardiac pacing and defibrillation, bioengineering education, and computational modeling of bioengineering problems. His research, educational and conference efforts have been funded by the NIH, the Whitaker Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the Flinn Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and the American Heart Association. He was an invited participant in the 2004 Whitaker Academic Leadership Program, and is now a frequent small group facilitator for the Florida-based Institute for Academic Leadership. Dr. Sweeney is an author on over 70 journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings papers and patents.
