Notice Regarding Dr. Jim Sweeney's departure from FGCU . . .

Dr. Jim Sweeney will be leaving FGCU at the end of the Fall 2014 semester to assume his new position as Head of the School of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering at Oregon State University.  We will certainly miss Dr. Sweeney and his many valuable contributions to our young and emerging college, and we wish him much success, enjoyment and fulfillment in his new leadership position in the Northwest.

In response to Dr. Sweeney’s imminent departure, the following  organizational changes will be made in the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering effective January 1, 2015:  (1) the Bioengineering Program will become the Bioengineering Department and Dr. R. Christopher Geiger will serve as the Bioengineering Department Chair; (2) the Software Engineering Program will become the Software Engineering Department and Dr. Dahai Guo will serve as Software Engineering Department Chair.

We are also now in the process of recruiting several new faculty members to the College with planned start dates of fall 2015:  (1) two faculty members in Bioengineering; (2) one faculty member in Software Engineering; and (3) one faculty member in Environmental Engineering.  We are also recruiting a replacement staff member for Christian Bokrand, our current environmental engineering lab supervisor, who will be reassigned to work full time with Dr. Joseph Simmons, the Backe Chair of Renewable Energy and Director of the forthcoming FGCU Emergent Technologies Institute (ETI).  The ETI, which will house future expansions of research, instruction and outreach activities of the College and the broader University community, is planned for construction just north of the FGCU campus during the 2015 calendar year.

I hope you agree that these are exciting times for the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering.

Yours truly,

Richard A. Behr, Ph.D., P.E., F. ASCE, F. AEI
Dean
