Climate Change and the Sunshine State

When: Thursday, January 31, 7:30 to 9:00 pm

Where: The Student Union Ballroom

Who: Don Miller, member of The Climate Project

Information on the Presentation: Global warming and the resulting climate change is perhaps the most crucial issue currently facing our global civilization. This phenomenon transcends borders and political affiliations and threatens our way of life. Its effects are being felt by everyone and everything on the planet. This presentation was based on the award winning slide show created by Nobel Peace Prize co-winner for 2007, Mr. Al Gore. The presentation covered the causes and effects of global warming, their impact on the Sunshine State and what we, as citizens of the Earth, can do to help. The good news is that with political will and individual action we can reverse the trend. Attendees gained a better understanding of the impact of climate change and what specific actions they can take as individuals to help reverse the current trend.

Information on the Presenter: Don Miller is a retired high-technology sales and marketing executive now serving as a volunteer presenter with the Climate Project. He has been personally trained by the Honorable Al Gore and The Climate Project to serve as a volunteer presenter for the organization. The training occurred over two and a half days and focused on providing select groups of trainees with a deep understanding of Al Gore's slide show that forms the basis of his Academy Award-winning film, An Inconvenient Truth.  In addition, trainees received instruction on scientific issues and presentation skills.  Climate Project presenters give presentations to diverse audiences about the threat of global warming. Don is a member of the community currently numbering 1,700 people trained by Mr. Gore and The Climate Project in the US and worldwide.  This group has been extraordinarily successful at reaching and informing people in their communities about the global climate crisis and its solutions. Don is a Florida native who spent over 30 years living and working in California's Silicon Valley. He and his wife recently returned to Florida. They currently live in Apollo Beach, part of the Tampa Bay area.

Information on The Climate Project: In June 2006, The Climate Project began operations based in Nashville, Tennessee, as non-profit organization with the mission of increasing public awareness of the climate crisis at a grassroots level throughout the United States and abroad.  By April 2007, a diverse group of 1,000 volunteers from every corner of the United States had been trained to present a version of the slide show based on the Academy Award-winning film An Inconvenient Truth. In addition, the Climate Project has trained almost 400 people in the United Kingdom and Australia with international trainings being planned in Spain, India, China, Canada and others. The heart of The Climate Project lies in the commitment, dedication and passion of presenters to educate, encourage and increase dialogue about the climate crisis and its solutions.
