What's New

January 8 2012:  Please note that applications received now will be considered for FALL 2012 placements. No new placements are being made for the current semester, Spring 2012.

If you thought you missed the Thanksgiving deadline to hand in your application, you're in luck! Very recently several new agencies have asked to participate in the program this spring, so the deadline has been extended. Descriptions of these agencies and their needs will be posted shortly.

Please get your application in as soon as possible -- placements will be made during the first 2 weeks of spring semester!

“What’s New” posts a list of schools participating in Circle of Friends and their requests for tutors. If you are interested in helping at one of these schools, click on "Join" and follow the four easy steps  to apply as a COF tutor. I’ll then contact you with information about the required pre-service and in-service training. Following pre-service training, we’ll make contact with a school and get you started.

Thank you for your interest!

Gulf is initiating the AVID program this October. Training will take place late in September. Tutors are needed on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Tutors work one-on-one with students to help them succeed in coursework. This program is not for overachieving middle school students, but for those capable of challenges and requiring help to reach goals.  Tutors work during the regular school day. Schedule of AVID classes is not available yet, but will be between the hours 10:45 and 3:45 PM.

High Schools

Island Coast High School

Cape Coral

Liaison:  Kurt Thoreson

Needs:  In the AVID program, tutors will work with freshmen one-on-one to help them succeed in college prep coursework. Tutors may choose the subject in which they'd like to tutor. This program is not for overachieving high school students, but for those capable of challenges and requiring help to reach goals.  Tutors work during the regular school day. Schedule of AVID classes is not available yet (will be sometime between the hours 7:15 AM and 1:45 PM) -- will be posted as soon as it's set!

(More info not on site:  AVID provides training for its teachers, then the teachers inform the tutors how to proceed. They don’t expect subject matter expertise. Emphasis is on individual attention. Teachers show hs freshmen college prep strategies. Kurt thinks the best day to start is January 24, after exams.)
