Graduate Student Tuition Waivers and Assistantships

Graduate Tuition Waivers

General Eligibility Criteria

  • Admitted to FGCU as a degree-seeking graduate student or have a pending application for admission (an award may be committed prior to admission, but will not be credited until enrollment);
  • Submit a Graduate Tuition Waiver Application and supplemental materials as required by the program or college by posted deadline dates below.
    • Visit program/college websites or contact the person listed below for your college to inquire about supplemental requirements.  Incomplete applications may not be given full consideration.

Waiver Value

Graduate tuition waivers cover only the graduate matriculation (tuition) fee for in-state or out-of-state students, depending on the residency of the student. Waivers do not cover undergraduate courses or any additional fees.  For a complete breakdown of tuition and fees, CLICK HERE.

NON-FLORIDA residents: Please note that colleges have little to no funding for out-of-state waivers.  Please consult with your college to determine if they award out-of-state waivers.  If you are interested in working as a graduate assistant, let your program coordinator know.  There are a limited number of assistantships offered each year university-wide for non-Florida residents.  The recipients of these assistantships are granted the equivalent of in-state tuition rates while employed.  This accommodation is for specifically approved assistantships only.  Not all assistantships qualify.  Contact the Office of Graduate Studies for more information.

The following is the 2009 - 2010 academic year values of tuition waivers:

  • In-state waivers $230.70 per credit hour
  • Out-state waivers $757.15 per credit hour

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students Seeking a Waiver

The awarding of waivers is competitive. Colleges have limited funds available and therefore have established customized selection criteria. Graduate tuition waivers are awarded through college departments. You may be required to submit additional forms or provide additional information to your program. Please refer to the list below for those requirements.

Waiver Renewal

Waiver renewal is NOT automatic!

Most awards are guaranteed for one term only - fall, spring, or summer - the term for which you initially receive your waiver. A new application must be submitted for each term. You should also contact the college or department that initially awarded your waiver to inquire about any additional renewal requirements.  Each College has a review process for the awarding of tuition waivers. These decisions are made soon after the designated application deadline.

Graduate Assistantships

Graduate assistantships are hourly-waged or stipend employment opportunities.  Graduate assistantships are available through academic departments and administrative units within the University.  Please check with your Academic department for current graduate assistantship opportunities.  For positions outside of the Colleges, please visit the
Career Development Services website.
