Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What financial aid is available through the Honors Program?

The Honors Program offers housing scholarships, stipends, in-state tuition waivers and out-of-state waivers.  These scholarships are given out in April/May prior to the following school year and are exclusive to students in the FGCU Honors Program.

Are Honors Courses more difficult?

As for coursework, Honors courses are generally not more difficult.  Honors courses allow students to have a more rich experience because all of the students have the ability to follow and learn at the same level of learning. What is different is that the material in these classes tends to be a bit more interdisciplinary and will allow students to take advantage of professors' teaching in their own areas of specialization.

Do I have to live in the Honors Housing if I am in the Honors Program?

Honors students are eligible for priority consideration for the Honors Residence Hall.
All incoming honors students who are incoming freshmen who are living on campus must opt to live in Honors Hall or a special academic [music, engineering] or athletic
[cross-country, soccer, etc] residence community to receive a renewable honors
scholarship.

If you choose to live in the Honors Hall you must also request Honors Hall on your application
for housing.*

*Freshmen who choose not to live in the Honors Residence Hall will not be considered for a renewable Honors Scholarship.

Will I be in honors classes with only honors students?

Generally, only honors students take honors class. We occasionally do allow students with exceptional GPAs to take one honors class to "test out" their interest in the program. But these seats are only open after all honors students register and it must be approved by the Honors Director.

Can I be in the Honors Program if I am a transfer student?

Yes.  Transfer students are encouraged to apply to the program.

Do I need to reapply each year to the Honors Program once I am accepted?

No.  All Honors students are required to fill out a renewal form, once a year, if they wish to continue to participate in the program.

What if my interests don't lie in Ecology or World Affairs?

You never have to take courses in any of the specialized areas. We will very often offer courses with environmental significance, but these will not be usually "environmentalist" classes. For example, a class on toxins and water flow would be one that we might offer under this area. We have a ton to offer for students not specializing in these areas.

What is the GPA required to stay in the Honors Dorm.

The GPA to stay in the Honors Dorm is 3.3.  If a student falls below a 3.3 then they are put on Honors probation and given one semester to bring up their grades.

Are students in the Honors Dorm placed with other students in the same grade level?

The Office of Housing & Residence Life assignments are made according to a combination of factors including: availability, date of application, roommate requests, building/room preferences and Living Learning Communities.  The Office of Housing & Residence Life makes every attempt to honor requests.  Please keep in mind that it is not always possible to satisfy all of these requests.

Can my Housing scholarship be used for off campus housing?

Once a student is given an Honors Housing scholarship it is not transferable to use for off campus housing.
