The FGCU Honors Program offers participating students opportunities unavailable to most undergraduate students.
Financial Aid
There are financial aid packages that are available only to students of the Honors Program! We offer scholarships, need-based aid, housing scholarships and tuition waivers to qualified students.
Early Registration
Students hate it when the best courses fill before they get a chance to register. FGCU Honors students have the luxury of early registration. They can register as soon as registration begins! So whether an Honors student is a freshman or a senior, the chance of a class being closed before Honors registration is exactly 0%!
Recognition
Honors students are recognized at graduation through their wearing of the Honors cords. They also have it noted on both their diplomas and transcripts that they graduated with honors.
Special Programs
The Honors Program believes that education, while an important part of our lives, is not the only ingredient that goes into creating a successful life. We guide students toward the most effective mentors, provide opportunities for independent research, offer transformative programs in fitness (ever think about running a marathon?), encourage students to acquire foreign languages (Wie heisst du?), and offer a host of events that encourage students to think about their world.
Special Courses
Many people just want to get their general education courses “out of the way.” That will be the last thing on an Honors student’s mind. Our Honors Program offers a unique set of core courses that are available only to Honors students.
For example, Honors Students might complete General Education requirements in natural science and humanities by touring the Florida Watershed with professors in environmental biologists and poets. Rather than simply learning how water is used and what it means, they will encounter this water by travelling (sometimes waist-deep) its very routes.
Core Tracks
FGCU is Florida’s environmental university that imagines its graduates playing an important role in local, state and world affairs. We offer two interdisciplinary core tracks that help Honors students develop mature perspectives on the environment and ethics: Environmental and Ecological Stewardship and Ethics and World Affairs. Students electing these tracks will gain breadth and depth of perspective regarding the most pressing issues and most current research involving these two areas.
Great Books
We also offer the FGCU Great Books Tutorial. In this class, students can read the classic texts that helped to make the world in which we think and learn. For the student who wants to seize the opportunity to read Dostoevsky or Marx, Plato or Aquinas, Fanon or Newton, this is the class for you! They are taught by faculty from across the campus in a tutorial setting and provide students with the opportunity to discuss and reflect on the greatest thoughts in history.
Honors Housing
Many Honors students take advantage of Honors housing. It provides a ready-made community of like-minded students. If you need a study partner, a ride to an Honors function, or just a friend to run with, the Honors dorm makes for a convenient and easy way to meet people and stay involved with all that the Honors Program offers.
