Degree Evaluation Availability and General Information

  1. What is an on-line Degree Evaluation?
A Degree Evaluation is a web-based report that helps track a student’s academic progress against a selected degree program.  The Degree Evaluation does not replace advising with your academic advisor – it is a supplement.

  2. Does this mean I no longer need to see my academic advisor about my degree plan?
No.  The Degree Evaluation system is not a replacement for meeting with your academic advisor.  It is an on-line advising tool that you and your advisor can use to monitor your academic progress.

  3. When can I view my Degree Evaluation?
You can view your on-line Degree Evaluation at any time, 24/7, using Gulfline.

  4. Who can use the Degree Evaluation system?
Undergraduate, degree-seeking students who have been admitted Fall 2007 or after can use the Degree Evaluation system. Students with an Undeclared major and those admitted prior to Fall 2007 will need to see their academic advisor for a Degree Evaluation.

  5. I am completing a degree program from a catalog prior to Fall 2007.  Can I still use the Degree Evaluation system?
You may still be able to use the Degree Evaluation system to evaluate your other degree requirements, but the evaluation may not list the correct requirements because of program changes since you were admitted.  You will need to contact your academic advisor to ensure your Degree Evaluation is correct.  You can do a “What-if” Analysis for another major, effective Fall 2007.

  6. Is a Degree Evaluation an OFFICIAL audit?
A Degree Evaluation is not considered OFFICIAL, but is used to supplement advising with your academic advisor.

  7. What are the “General Requirements” and the “Detail Requirements” screen options?
The “General Requirements” screen lists the overall degree requirements for a particular degree program.
The “Detail Requirements” display option breaks down the different areas for the degree program and lists courses the student has taken to satisfy each area’s requirements.
It is recommended that you use the “Detail Requirements” option.

  8. Some courses on my Degree Evaluation are hyperlinked to the online catalog, and some are not.  How can I see the descriptions for all courses in my program?
The system only hyperlinks courses to the on-line catalog that you have not yet taken and that are specifically required (i.e., not part of a list of courses) for your program.  To search for other course descriptions, go directly to the online course catalog in Gulfline.

  9. Are there requirements the Degree Evaluation does not check?
The Degree Evaluation does not check Service Learning and the Summer Enrollment requirements. You should use the Degree Evaluation in conjunction with your academic advisor, the FGCU catalog and any information that your major discipline provides to you to ensure that you remain on track for completing these requirements prior to graduation.  NOTE: The Service Learning and Summer Enrollment requirements are listed in the Additional Degree Requirements Area in the Degree Evaluation; however, they will be listed as Not Met, as you need to confirm successful completion of these requirements with your College Advisor.

  10. What is a "What-if" Evaluation?
The "What-if" Analysis option allows you to run an evaluation for any available program and major. This option is also used when generating an evaluation for a second major, a concentration or minors.

  11. What does “Entry Term” mean? What does “Evaluation Term” mean?
"Entry Term" is the term your requirements will be evaluated against. For undergraduate students, "Entry Term" is the term of application to FGCU and/or major declaration into a College. "Evaluation Term" is the current term.

  12. Why is the Expected Graduation Date on my Degree Evaluation incorrect?
IGNORE - at FGCU, this date is automatically generated and may not always reflect the actual Expected Date of Graduation.  If studetns run a "What-if" Degree Evaluation, the Expected Date of Graduation will be blank.

  13. Why does the Used # of Credits exceed the Required # of Credits at the top of the Degree Evaluation, but the Total Required indicates the requirement has not been met?
Students often transfer a # of credits that do not meet specific degree requirements.  These credits are listed in the Used # of Credits and are located in the Additional Electives area on the report.  When all degree requirements have been satisfied, the Total Required will be fulfilled and indicate "Yes".

  14. How are my transfer grades listed in the Degree Evaluation?
Grades for transfer courses include a T before the grade in the Grade Column on the Degree Evaluation. (Example: A transfer course with an A would be listed as TA.)  Some transfer courses are not graded and a T will appear in the Grade Column.

    Placement of Courses

  15. How does the Degree Evaluation decide where to place courses that I have completed?
The Degree Evaluation processes your courses chronologically, unless an Area has been built to accept courses in a different order.  The courses are posted based on a "best fit" scenario and the way the requirements are defined.  It will look through each of your courses, and then assigns each course to the first requirement in your degree program that the course will fulfill.

  16. The Degree Evaluation placed one of my courses in two places.  Is that okay?
Yes, the Degree Evaluation is programmed to recognize that courses can fulfill multiple requirements, but the credits will only be counted once in your degree program.

  17. How will courses that I have substituted or waived appear on the Degree Evaluation?
Please contact your College Advisor regarding course substitutions and waivers.  This information will be programmed after your substitution or waiver is approved.  The course that you substituted will automatically be used to fulfill the requirement specified, and you will see that course listed next to the requirement.  A waiver will be noted as "waived" for the requirement.

  18. I repeated a course, and I do not understand how it appears on the Degree Evaluation. Can you explain this to me?
Please check with your advisor to ensure any repeated courses are recorded correctly on your Degree Evaluation.  If repeated courses are not marked with a repeat code, they will count multiple times in the evaluation.  If you are repeating a course to raise a grade for a specific degree requirement, the repeated course will not be listed in that area on your Degree Evaluation until the required grade is achieved.

  19. Does my Degree Evaluation include the classes I am currently taking?
Yes.  Also, if you run the evaluation for a future term for which you have already registered, it will include those classes as well.

  20. Some requirements have "or" & "and" next to them.  What does this mean?
A requirement with an "or" next to it means that you can take the requirement or the one listed above it. A requirement with an "and" next to it means that you must take the requirement and the requirement above it.

  21. What happens to courses that I withdrew from or failed?
Any course with a non-passing or incomplete grade will appear at the end of the evaluation in the Additional Electives Area.

  22. What happens to courses when I receive an "I" (Incomplete) grade?
Any course with an "I" (Incomplete) grade will appear at the end of the evaluation in the Additional Electives Area area until a final satisfactory grade is earned.  Once the required grade is achieved and recorded, the course will be listed appropriately.

  23. I clicked the Additional Information link on the Degree Display Options page and there are Unused courses listed.  What should I do?
You should contact your advisor to discuss any questions related to your Degree Evaluation, including Unused courses.  Your advisor will investigate the problem to correct your report.  NOTE:  If a course appears on the list of Unused courses with a 9000 #, please contact your advisor immediately to have this course # adjusted.  9000 #'s are no longer used at FGCU.

  24. Why does the General Electives Area on the Degree Evaluation show as Not Met?
All courses taken that did not apply to any other requirement will appear in this area as a general elective, including courses that were attempted.  You may need a specific number of General Electives to meet the total number of credits required for your degree.  This area will remain as Not Met as it is necessary for you to meet with your academic advisor to ensure you have satisfied the total credits for your degree.

  25. I earned an AA (Associate of Arts) degree from a Florida community college before I transferred to FGCU.  How does this appear on my Degree Evaluation?
If your AA degree has been posted to your academic record at FGCU and the courses articulated through the Admissions Office, you will automatically satisfy the General Education and Gordon Rule requirements at FGCU.  This will be noted on your Degree Evaluation in the General Education Area.

  26. I am pursuing a Second Bachelor’s degree at FGCU.  How does this appear on my Degree Evaluation?
If your prior Bachelor’s degree has been posted to your academic record at FGCU and the courses articulated through the Admissions Office, you will automatically satisfy the General Education and Gordon Rule requirements at FGCU.  This will be noted on your Degree Evaluation in the General Education Area.

    Majors and Minors

  27. What do I do if my Degree Evaluation lists my major incorrectly?
You will need to contact your academic advisor to complete a Change of Major form.  In the meantime, you can run a "What-If" evaluation for the correct major after clicking on the appropriate radio button.

  28. I have a dual major.  Will I be able to check both majors on my Degree Evaluation?
If you have declared a second major, it should be listed on the Degree Evaluation screen with your Primary Major and the degree requirements will appear on your Degree Evaluation.

  29. I have two minors.  Will I be able to check both minors on my Degree Evaluation?
If you have declared two minors, they should be listed on the Degree Evaluation screen with your Primary Major and the degree requirements will appear on your Degree Evaluation.

  30. I am a pre-major.  How can I be sure that I'm keeping up with all of my degree requirements?
Use the "What-if” Analysis option to request a degree evaluation for a major prior to acceptance into that major.

  31. When will I be able to generate a Degree Evaluation for the Music programs?
The Music programs should be available to view in Fall 2009.

  32. How do I check to see if I am eligible for a concentration and/or minor?
Use the "What-if” Analysis link at the bottom of the degree evaluation pages.  After choosing a program and major, select the "Add More" button to enter a concentration and/or minor.  If you do not have a concentration in your degree program, click “None” before choosing a minor.

  33. How do I check to see if I have completed the requirements for an Associate of Arts degree?
Use the “What-if” Analysis link at the bottom of the degree evaluation pages.  Choose the AA – Associate of Arts Program and * for the First Major and follow the “What-if” Analysis instructions.  You should then confirm this information with your College Advisor before filing an Application to Graduate form for the AA.

    Grade Point Averages

  34. How can I find my major GPA (grade point average)?
For most majors, all of your required major courses are listed in one area. The grade point average at the end of this area is your major GPA for courses completed at FGCU only.  The grades from any transfer courses are not included in your GPA.

  35. What are the program and overall grade point averages that are listed on the first page of my evaluation?
The overall grade point average is your cumulative grade point average; however, this GPA only includes courses you have completed at FGCU.  Any transfer course grades are not included in your GPA.

  36. What if I think my Degree Evaluation is wrong?
Undergraduate students should contact your academic advisor to clarify any questions/concerns regarding your Degree Evaluation. While we have done everything we could to ensure your evaluation runs correctly, it would have been impossible for us to predict every possible situation or problem. If this occurs, you should print a copy of your evaluation and bring it with you to your advisor.

    Resolving Errors or Questions

  37. Why does nothing happen when I select "Generate New Evaluation"?
You must select the radio button next to the program to "Generate New Evaluation". If you do not, you will receive a message, "Unable to process your request at this time. Please try back later".  In addition, even if you were admitted in Fall 2007, some degree programs were not built in the Degree Evaluation system until Fall 2008.  If you selected the radio button next to your degree program and receive this error message, you can try a “What-if” Analysis with an entry term of Fall 2008.  If this still does not work, you should contact your advisor for assistance.
