Florida Gulf Coast University vigorously protects freedom of inquiry and expression, and expects civility, equity of treatment and mutual respect to be practiced in all aspects of University life. The Ombuds Office promotes early intervention to reduce the negative consequences of conflict.
The Ombuds Office cannot provide legal advice and is not a substitute for University Regulations, Policies or the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The Office cannot provide advice involved with non-university related disagreements or problems.
Once a problem or concern is referred to the Ombuds Office, the Office will work the concerned parties in an advisory capacity. Accordingly, the Ombuds Office will assist in the identification of the appropriate points of contact, information sources, Regulations and Policies related to addressing the matter.
Pursuant to Article 20.F. of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between FGCU and the United Faculty of Florida – FGCU Chapter, faculty members may avail themselves of the “Conflict Management System” of FGCU. For faculty members, there is a designated Faculty Ombuds who provides this service.
Pursuant to FGCU Regulation 4.004 Student Grievances and FGCU Policy 1.010 Student Course & Credits Grievance Policy, students with concerns regarding their access to courses and credits granted toward a degree may seek assistance from the Student Ombudsman.
The Ombuds Office is committed to maintaining the confidentiality of those who use the services of the office to the greatest extent possible, while adhering to legal requirements.
