The Staff Advisory Council hosted its 3rd Annual Soar Into Spring series during the week of student spring break. All staff (A&P, SP and OPS) and faculty (both full-time and Adjunct) were invited to attend. The schedule is outlined below. This year we expanded our options and worked toward satisfying three main goals:

1) Providing professional development opportunities
2) Providing personal development opportunities
3) Getting to know the FGCU Campus

We thank all those who assisted us with developing and implementing a successful schedule. If you have suggestions or comments for next year's program, please send an email to sac@fgcu.edu with your feedback.

9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. - Business Technology Services presents “PowerPoint – The Greatest Slideshow on Earth”

Location – Library Room # 438

PowerPoint is an amazing application and in this introductory class we will introduce you to some basic features of PowerPoint 2013.  We will learn how to create simple presentations, edit and format slides, utilize slide transitions and animations, insert clip art, pictures and charts, and more!!

11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - Campus Recreation presents “Introduction to Yoga” (ADDITIONAL SEATS ADDED)

NEW LOCATION - Alico Arena Auxiliary Gym, 2nd floor

This is a traditional based Yoga class that offers synchronized movements which smoothly transition from one pose to the next. A perfect blend of stretching, strengthening, and relaxation all at once.

Note: Due to popular demand, this course has been expanded to include additional seats and will now take place in the Alico Arena Auxiliary Gym.

FULL - 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. - “Sustainable Nutrition”

Location – Cohen Center Room # 214

Presented by Joan Faris, FGCU Faculty and Registered Dietitian

Sustainability is one of the guiding principles of FGCU, but what does it really mean to be sustainable? In this program, you will learn the "what", "why", and "how" when it comes to sustainable nutrition. It is easier than you think with resources close at hand, such as FGCU's Food Forest and SWFL Farmer's Markets. This type of nutrition is easy, healthy, and fresh!

FULL - 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. - Institute of Government presents “Handling Difficult People Effectively”

Location – Cohen Center Room # 213

Presented by Dr. David Kelley

Do you ever find yourself confronted by an angry or difficult person? How can you stay productive and positive when handling someone who just rubs you the wrong way? This workshop will help you to understand the dynamics of conflict, why people often act as they do and how to stay in control of your reaction to their behavior.

Objectives: 1) Learn how to confront conflict effectively; 2) Understand how to interact with the difficult person who works with/for you; 3)  Be able to disagree without anger; 4)  Identify your own “hot buttons”; 5) Develop skills to give and receive criticism more effectively

Location – Library Room # 438

Smaller and very versatile, tablets are here to stay.  With a different operating system and user interface, this course hopes to shorten the learning curve and give you a basic understanding of Windows 8 and the Microsoft Surface.  Some topics we will discuss are:  Start screen navigation, Charms bar, Desktop navigation, PC settings, Windows defender and Internet explorer 10.

This class will help you meet your communication needs here at work.  We have taken and combined the most used tasks and functions of Outlook and assembled them here for a “one-stop shopping” experience.  Some of the topics we will discuss include: creating rules, inserting screenshots, quick parts, jump lists, auto replies, categories and the people pane.

FULL - 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. - Business Technology Services presents “Excel – You Can’t Judge a Workbook by its Cover”

Location – Library Room # 438

We took the best from all four excel classes and then some!  In this course you will learn to navigate Excel, identify various commands and ribbons, create a basic worksheet, apply formatting to a worksheet, utilize simple formulas and functions, and represent data with charts and graphs.  This is an intermediate class, a basic knowledge of excel is expected.

This session will explore the idea that incivility is a problem requiring individual attention and response.  You will learn strategies for responding to incivility and fostering civility on campus.  Civility happens one person at a time.

Noon - 1:30 p.m. - The Staff Advisory Council Presents the “SAC Picnic”

Location – Cohen Center Lawn

Enjoy a free picnic lunch (sponsored by the Staff Advisory Council) with colleagues and get acquainted with a beautiful public area on campus.  We will be collecting canned goods to support the FGCU Campus Pantry.  Please bring your food or cash donations to the donation tent on the Cohen Center Lawn.

2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. - Business Technology Services presents “Get Secure”

Location – Library Room # 438

Get Secure is a campaign to bring awareness to on how to protect yourself, your devices and data.  We will discuss ways to protect your identity online and on social media.  We will review and answer questions regarding the restricted data policy and how it will affect your day to day work.   And we will review some simple training on encryption to keep our restricted data safe and comply with the restricted data policy.

When applying for a job, your resume or CV is typically the first impression you make on a prospective employer. This presentation will be helpful for those in the early stages of their career, as well as seasoned professionals. Even if you are not currently looking to change positions, it is important to keep this document updated and looking professional.

Location – Cohen Center Room # 214

The Officers of SAC would like to invite you to the Spring 2014 “SAC Chat.”  As your elected representatives, the Staff Advisory Council would like to hear from you regarding any issue that is important to FGCU staff.  The mission of SAC is to facilitate effective communication, so what better way to accomplish this that to hear from you directly?  If you have 10 or 15 minutes, please drop by and tell us what is on your mind – You do not need to stay for the entire hour and a half.  We look forward to seeing many of you there.

Come out and learn how you can grow your own food sustainably in Southwest Florida.

2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. - Business Technology Services presents “One Note: Keep Calm and Get Organized”

Location – Library Room # 438

One Note is a digital notebook that provides a single location where you can gather your notes and information, organize information to suit individual needs and retrieve information effectively. In this class you will learn to setup and personalize the OneNote program, share and collaborate on Notebooks, organize notebooks so that they can be easily located during a search, and edit and link content in a notebook.
