Soar Into Spring

 
 

2015 SAC Soar Into Spring series (March 2 – March 6, 2015 

The Staff Advisory Council is hosting its 4th Annual Soar Into Spring series during the week of student spring break. All staff (A&P, SP and OPS) and faculty (both full-time and Adjunct) are invited to attend. The schedule is outlined below. This year we are expanding our opportunities while working towards three main goals:

1) Providing professional development opportunities
2) Providing personal development opportunities
3) Getting to know the FGCU Campus

We thank all those who assisted us with developing and implementing a successful schedule. If you have suggestions or comments for next year's program, please send an email to sac@fgcu.edu with your feedback.

Location – Library Room # 438

Smaller and very versatile, tablets are here to stay. With a different operating system and user interface, this course hopes to shorten the learning curve and give you a basic understanding of Windows 8 and the Microsoft Surface.

Location – Alico Fitness Center

Stretch and Relaxation is a class close to Yoga. It is designed to stretch out and all the muscles in the body as well as melt all the stress away. It is a slow paced class where participants will use their own body weight. Registration Cap: 30 participants

Today’s workplace is much different than that of the past. Increased emphasis is being placed on the importance of relationship building, focused listening, and engaging team members also as individuals in successful organizations. Emotional Intelligence can be a powerful tool for leading others effectively and enhancing organizational well-being.

Objectives:

  • Recognize the five competencies which build your emotional intelligence level
  • Be more intentional in your actions
  • Listen to emotions for better decision making
  • Use energy and enthusiasm to motivate others

(Full) 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. - Business Technology Services presents “Excel - Formulas and Functions - You Don’t Do The Math”

Location – Library Room # 438

In this class you will learn to build formulas, utilize conditional logic and apply functions to information to be able to harness excel to perform calculations and get the results you need. You are required to take “All Dressed Up” or “Building Blocks” before taking this course.

  • Build formulas

  • Use absolute and relative cell reference
  • Edit formulas
  • Use SUM function and autoSUM
  • Insert date functions
  • Use conditional logic in a formula
  • Understand basic statistical functions
  • Work with three-dimensional formulas

We welcome you to come tour our space and learn more about how YOU and the FGCU family are helping our students that are experiencing food insecurity. See firsthand the generosity of the staff, faculty, students and Southwest Florida community and learn how we are connected to the Harry Chapin Food Bank. We look forward to sharing our story.

12 p.m. – 1 p.m. - FGCU “Wings of Hope” presents “Florida Panthers”

Location – Panther Room (RH #247)

The presentation on Florida Panther will include the natural history, panther kittens, wildlife that lives with the Florida panther, Panther research, and ways you can help save this endangered species. Only 180 left in the entire world. The FWC Panther team partners with the Wings of Hope program with up to date information.

*Participants will receive a panther and kitten photo taken with infrared cameras that are placed in panther habitat*

1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. - QEP Forum

Location - SRHM Room# 114

We’re seeking your feedback as we implement our next QEP (FGCUScholarship: Think • Write • Discover) that begins in the Fall 2015. These meeting will also help us prepare for the upcoming SACS on-campus visit (March 31st – April 2nd); the QEP is an important piece of the reaccreditation process.

 Together, we will:

  • Update everyone on the implementation plan
  • Describe the development of discipline-specific sections of Composition II
  • Identify courses within each major that engage the QEP
  • Discuss QEP talking points for faculty and staff
  • Consider ongoing opportunities and challenges

 Please join members of the QEP Steering Committee to share your thoughts and ideas about the implementation of FGCUScholars: Think • Write • Discover and the role of the QEP in the SACS reaccreditation process. We need and welcome your input.

Location – Cohen Center Room #247

Presented by Dr. Ava Fluty

Do you ever find yourself confronted by an angry or difficult person? How can you stay productive and positive when handling someone who just rubs you the wrong way? This workshop will help you to understand the dynamics of conflict, why people often act as they do and how to stay in control of your reaction to their behavior.

(Full) 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. - Library Computing & Technology presents “Got Video? Share it! - Basic video editing with Movie Maker”

Location – Library Room #211

This workshop will give users an introduction to video editing using Microsoft’s free Windows Live Movie Maker. By the end of the session, users will be able to import photographs and video files into Movie Maker, edit a short video with music and titles, and then export and publish it to the web.

Learn how to incorporate more sustainable and healthy foods into your everyday life.  The foods that are good for you, tend to be good the planet and local communities.  This session will explain the health, ecological, and social benefits of making smart dietary decisions.

Noon - 1:30 p.m. - The Staff Advisory Council Presents the 4th Annual “SAC Community Picnic”

Location – Cohen Center Lawn

Enjoy a free picnic lunch (sponsored by the Staff Advisory Council) with colleagues and get acquainted with a beautiful public area on campus.  Also, we will be collecting canned goods to support the FGCU Campus Pantry.  Please bring your food or cash donations to the donation tent on the Cohen Center Lawn.

When applying for a job, your resume or CV is typically the first impression you make on a prospective employer. This presentation will be helpful for those in the early stages of their career, as well as seasoned professionals. Even if you are not currently looking to change positions, it is important to keep this document updated and looking professional.

(Full) Noon – 1 p.m. - Tour of the FGCU Food Forest

Location – FGCU Food Forest (Near the FGCU Welcome Center and the Kleist Health Center)

This tour will detail how the student ran-student initiated Food Forest began. We will define what makes the Food Forest a permaculture garden, and how it can be a tool for our community to learn about the vast array of foods from all over the world that can be grown locally. Come out and learn how you can grow your own food sustainably in Southwest Florida.
