Dear Step Ahead Math Student:

Congratulations on your admission to Florida Gulf Coast University! The Office of Undergraduate Studies looks forward to the opportunity of working with you as you progress through the Step Ahead program during the Summer B session, and into your career as an FGCU undergraduate student.

At this time, you have been offered admission to FGCU through participation in the Step Ahead bridge program for summer 2014 by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Please note that you are required to complete the Step Ahead Program during the summer B 2014 term in order to enroll in fall 2014 courses at FGCU. In order to confirm your participation in the Step Ahead program, you must take the following steps (in order):

1) Sign up for Eagle View Orientation by logging into Gulfline, and pay associated Orientation fees. Summer admit Orientation dates are: May 29-30; June 2-3; or June 5-6 (must select one of these)

2) After signing up for Orientation, confirm your reserved space in the program submitting a fully completed Program Acceptance Agreement (included in conditional admission letter) to Allison Bacigalupi, Step Ahead Coordinator. This Agreement can be scanned/emailed to abacigalupi@fgcu.edu or faxed to (239) 590-1230. ***Space is limited to 75 students; first come, first served!***

3) Students Requiring Summer Housing: Complete documentation for summer 2014 on-campus housing and pay application fee by priority deadline

4) Students Requiring Fall/Spring Housing: Complete documentation for fall 2014-spring 2015 on-campus housing and pay application fee by priority deadline

5) Submit completed immunization paperwork to Student Health Services to avoid account holds

6) Notify Step Ahead Coordinator of any accelerated credit expected (AP, IB, Cambridge AICE, Dual Enrollment)

 

Commonly Asked Questions:

What is the criteria to be a participant in Step Ahead? Undergraduate Admissions invites students to participate in the Step Ahead summer bridge program based on their high school GPA and standardized test scores, and it is open to students who are invited only.

When does the program take place? Students will attend FGCU’s summer B 2014 term, which is a six-week session running from Monday, June 23, 2014 to Friday, August 1, 2014.

What are the components of the program? Students participating in Step Ahead Math will complete MAT 1033 Intermediate Algebra (3 credits). Students will also be required to complete activities throughout the summer term, as determined by and coordinated through the Center for Academic Achievement (CAA).

What are the requirements for successful completion of the program? Students successfully complete the following requirements: Earning a grade of “C” or better in MAT 1033 Intermediate Algebra course; completing all activities with the Center for Academic Achievement (CAA) at a satisfactory level.

How do I get registered for my summer Step Ahead courses, and when do I register for fall? Once a student confirms his/her participation in Step Ahead Math and reserves a seat through the Step Ahead Coordinator, the student will be registered for his/her summer Step Ahead course (MAT 1033, Intermediate Algebra). The Step Ahead Coordinator will also register Step Ahead students for a General Education Math Course (i.e. MAC 1105 College Algebra) for the fall 2014 semester (students maintain enrollment with the same faculty who teaches their summer course). Students will register for the rest of their fall 2014 courses during the Advising Registration period on Day Two of Eagle View Orientation.

How much does the Step Ahead program cost? There are a few different costs associated with the Step Ahead program. Depending on a student’s housing situation (living at home, on-campus, or off-campus), the total cost for Step Ahead may vary. Below is a list of any cost that a student can incur for the program:
-Orientation Fee $135.00
-MAT 1033 Tuition $611.82 ($203.94 per credit, times 3 credits; based on FL Resident/Differential Tuition Rate)

-ID Card Fee $10.00
-Housing-Summer Application Fee $50.00
-Housing-Summer 6-week Rate $1100.00-1200.00 (rate subject to change and vary by room type)
-Textbooks $200.00 (including MyMathLab software; cost is approximate)

Students will also be responsible for any dining plans and/or miscellaneous additional costs they incur during the summer B 2014 term.

Is financial aid available for the summer term? Students seeking financial aid for the summer 2014 term are required to complete a 2013-2014 FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Certain grants and loans may cover summer coursework, and student should consult with the Financial Aid office to check their eligibility. Students may be required to enroll in additional coursework in order to meet eligibility criteria.

This will give you a solid background on what to expect at Orientation, as well as insight into the courses taken for each major, graduation requirements, and other academic policies and information.
