The Writing Center

The FGCU Writing Center assists student writers through free, learning-based writing consultations. Our primary goals are to help students improve their abilities to think independently, to write critically, and to learn and implement strategies that will assist them in producing effective writing assignments. We want to help students improve overall skills rather than merely work on one specific paper. Our consultants provide strategies and practice that help students to improve their ability to revise independently.

Writing consultants can assist student writers with the following:

  • Brainstorming
  • Formulating a clear thesis
  • Developing ideas
  • Organization
  • Revising
  • Formatting and Documentation

Writing Center sessions allow students to work one-on-one with a consultant. Sessions are 30 minutes long and available on a walk-in basis. The writer is an active participant in the session. After a session in which the writer and consultant work on one or two goals defined by the writer, students are expected to produce writing independently. Writing consultants can help writers identify issues of style and mechanics; however, they do not edit or proofread.

  • Thirty-minute Writing Center consultations are available on a walk-in basis.
