Have a digital or hard copy of your assignment or any pre-writing/notes. You may bring in your assignment printed out or on a laptop or tablet. You may also bring your work on a flash drive since the Writing Center has computers available for student use. We do not have a student printer available, so if you need to print your assignment, give yourself enough time to visit the closest student printers located in the library.
Bring a copy of the assignment guidelines. This helps your writing consultant understand the assignment requirements and can help him or her better recognize your professor’s expectations. If you are ever unsure of an assignment direction or if any points need clarification, it is best to consult the professor before visiting the Writing Center.
Come with questions. Discuss any questions or concerns you may have about your writing with the writing consultant. This can help them better understand what you hope to get out of the session.
Turn off your cell phone. You will only have 30 minutes to work with a writing consultant, so it is best to avoid distractions during your session.
Take notes. Take notes and make corrections on your assignment while you work with the consultant. This helps you remember what was said during the session and cuts down on time spent revising later.
Come in with an open mind and a willingness to work. It is important for you to be open to feedback from the writing consultant. You do not necessarily have to apply what he or she says to your paper; however, our consultants are trained to help you become a more effective writer and they have your best interests in mind.
