J Webb Horton, Gerri Moll President of Bank of America and Eagle student-athletes speak to a group of students.

What is the Eagle Math Program?

The program revolves around a workbook designed to meet Sunshine State Standards. Written by, Dr. Bill Engle. Prof. of Educational Studies, FGCU. It was modled after a similar program developed by the University of Southern Indiana with Vanderburg County Indiana Schools. The workbook features mathematical questions about sports. The goal of the program is to make math fun and get the students to understand the concepts. If the students successfully completed the basketball program they recieved a free home basketball game ticket. To kick off the program some FGCU Student-Athletes visited the following area schools to help get the students excited about the Eagle Math program. (CC- Collier County) (LC- Lee County)
Shadowlawn Elem. (CC)
J. Colin English Elem. (LC)
Calusa Park Elem. (CC)
Pelican Marsh Elem. (CC)
Highland Elem. (CC)
Lely Elem. (CC)

The booklet was divided into four quarters. The students had to complete
each section by the due date in order to successfully complete the program. (due dates to be provided)

Florida Gulf Coast University would like to acknowledge the late Dr. Charles Bertram as the founder of Eagle Math. Dr. Bertram was a Mathmatics instructor as well as the Faculty Athletics Representative at the University of Southern Indiana. In 1996, Dr. Bertram started the Eagle Math program and immediately received national recognition for its success with the students in the Evansville, Indiana community. FGCU Athletics would like to thank Dr. Bertram for his idea, as well as the University of Southern Indiana for sharing this project with us.

If interested in partiicpating in the 2004-2005 Eagle Math Program, Teachers, please email J. Webb Horton at jwhorton@fgcu.edu for more information.
