Dr. Margaret Banyan

Dr. Banyan received her Ph.D.in Public Administration and Policy and her Masters of Public Administration from Portland State University.   She previously taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at Portland State University and Western Oregon University in the Political Science and Public Administration departments.  Dr. Banyan is a part-time faculty member at Florida Gulf Coast University.  Dr. Banyan is the lead planner for public participation, land use planning and community planning.   As a nationally recognized expert on public participation and an experienced facilitator, Dr. Banyan integrates the vision of stakeholders with strong design.  As a result, participants understand their direct impact on shared spaces. 
Dr. Banyan is actively engaged in smart growth, special district, public transportation, and community issues in Southwest Florida.  As an expert in the field of citizen input and planning Dr. Banyan has published in the Public Administration Review, Administrative Theory and Praxis, and serves as a reviewer for several journals.  Dr. Banyan is also a member of the Lee County Smart Growth Advisory Committee and BikeWalkLee, a community coalition to complete the streets.  

Concurrent with her position at Florida Gulf Coast University, Dr. Banyan is a senior administrator in a special district.  She also has been a professional planner for Johnson Engineering, a full-time Professor of Public Policy and Administration at FGCU, and the Director for the Center for Public Participation at Portland State University.  Dr. Banyan has facilitated several Smart Growth Forums in Southwest Florida and worked with a variety of community organizations to build capacity.  As the Director of the Center for Public Participation at Portland State University, she designed and implemented public participation processes for multi-jurisdictional planning efforts.
