Geriatric Recreational Therapy
One of the most attractive features of the therapeutic
recreation profession is the great opportunity for variety and
diversity. There are constant challenges and the opportunity
for continued professional growth. The opportunity to
positively impact the quality of life of an individual with a
disability or limitation is extremely rewarding.
Therapeutic recreation services contribute to the broad
spectrum of health care through treatment (recreational
therapy), education, and the provision of adapted recreational
opportunities—all of which are instrumental to improving and
maintaining physical, cognitive, emotional, and social
functioning, preventing secondary health conditions, enhancing
independent living skills and the overall quality of life.
Unique to the FGCU Master of Science program is the focus on
Geriatric Recreation Therapy.
Populations are aging worldwide. This means that people
live longer, and the number of older persons is increasing. In
the U.S., of those born in 1900 nearly half died before they
were 50 years old. People born today can expect to live beyond
their 75th year. In 1900 about one in 25 Americans was over
65; today one in eight is over 65. The age group growing
fastest in our society and in many other countries is the
"very old": people aged 85 and over. This growth
will continue well into the 21st century, when one in five
Americans will be over 65, and there will be 15 to 18 million
persons over the age of 85.
These growth trends will result in a demand for
professionals with knowledge and expertise in aging. Expanded
career opportunities in gerontology are forecast in many
disciplines and professions, each area requiring a work force
with education and training in gerontology.
Employment Outlook
Therapeutic recreation offers a unique career opportunity
for individuals who value leisure experiences and enjoy
working with people with disabilities. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that
the rapidly growing number of older adults is expected to spur
job growth for recreational therapy professionals in
assisted-living facilities, adult daycare programs, and other
social assistance agencies. Continued growth also is expected
in community residential care facilities, as well as daycare
programs for individuals with disabilities.
