-
Y2K Project
started in 1996 at Price Communications Wireless Inc.
-
Set Y2K
goals: (1) minimize impact on core business; (2) meet budget constraints
($2 million).
-
Project
Life Cycle
-
Assessment:
hardware, firmware, OS, layered products, database engines, source
codes, interfaces (EDI), 3rd party vendors.
-
Y2K Assessment
Toolkits: COGEN 2000 -EDS, Tivoli Enterprise Software Solutions, CA-UNICENTER
2000. Reliability of the tools were determined by comparing the assessment
results from the tools with the assessment done by human beings (samples
of actual codes were used).
-
Assessment
results:
-
Core systems
(hardware, OS, layered products, DB engines, and external source codes
were not 100% Y2K compliant. Internal source codes and interface were 100%
Y2K compliant).
-
LAN (hardware,
OS, application software were not 100% Y2K compliant. DB engines were 100%
Y2K compliant).
-
WAN (Hardware
and OS were 100% Y2K compliant).
-
Desktop
Services (hardware, OS, external application software were not 100% Y2K
compliant. Internal application software was 100% Y2K compliant).
-
Development
of Strategies:
-
Core Systems
(upgrade hardware, OS, layered products, applications, and convert external
application software codes).
-
LAN (replace
servers, upgrade OS, backup software, anti-virus software, convert Pegasus
e-mail to MS Exchange, and convert MS Office Products to Office97).
-
Desktop
(replace 486 with new Pentium II, upgrade windows3.1 to windows95/NT, upgrade
terminal emulation packages)
-
Current
Status:
-
Assessment:
100% completed.
-
Blueprint/Strategy:
100% completed.
-
Renovation:
75% completed
-
Implementation/testing:
65% completed.
-
Meeting
cost constraints (currently $1.2 million, expect $1.7 million, budget $2
million).
Discussion
Summary
-
Management
issues: get budget for Y2K project approved.
-
Use of
a methodology is critical to avoid disruption.
-
Migration
can be another solution.
Develop
expectation about what will be changed.
