Biz Monday: University lights up international radar
Program ties in FGCU from China to Sweden
The College of Business at Florida Gulf Coast University began a unique international program in 1997 as the university was preparing to open. Titled the "Second Circle" international model, the program was intended to develop both academic and economic value for Southwest Florida.
As most quality international programs, the "Second Circle" agreements with international universities included opportunities for student and faculty exchanges, as well as joint program development.
What made the program unique was the connection beyond the university partnerships to link the business communities served by the partner universities - the "Circle" beyond the university campus. And while the international partnerships may have been initiated by the FGCU College of Business, they include opportunities for university-wide academic program exchanges.
The "Second Circle" program continues to reap success. The agreements in China, with Nankai and Yantai Universities, have led to relationships beyond the universities with the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA) and the Yantai City government. Delegations from both TEDA and Yantai have traveled to Southwest Florida on economic development visits.
The academic components of the "Second Circle" have been especially powerful. Student and faculty exchanges have brought over students from international partners to FGCU. FGCU has also established important business networks in Germany, Mexico, China and Sweden. This adds tremendous depth to the nature of an international business component at FGCU.
Consequently, while the "Second Circle" International Program is relatively young by traditional university standards, it has helped put FGCU and Southwest Florida on the international radar screen.
