A Message from the Dean of the College of Business
  Richard Pegnetter,. Ph.D.

January 2011: As a tribute to our Founding Dean, who retired this month, we are retaining his message here.

In the short time that our university has been in existence, FGCU's Lutgert College of Business (LCOB) has achieved many impressive milestones including accreditation by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business - which was awarded to the Florida Gulf Coast University College of Business on April 24, 2003. The LCOB's connection with the business community and its international partnerships and agreements has been a powerful driver behind this success. The Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) is a prime example of this connection and expansion in action. Established by former FGCU President William Merwin in the fall of 2005, the ICS will offer academic programs of internationally recognized quality. These programs will be shaped through partnerships with leading Chinese Universities and will ultimately have an impact and provide opportunities throughout FGCU.

The Institute of Chinese Studies at Florida Gulf Coast University was created to provide internationally recognized educational programs and services for university students and working professionals in the area of Chinese Studies. We achieve this through a variety of flexible partnerships, programs, and scholarship within a 'second circle' international partnership model with universities, communities, and business professionals from the People's Republic of China.

 History of the Institute

In September 2005, FGCU President William Merwin traveled to Tianjin, China and signed an agreement establishing a formal relationship between FGCU and Nankai University - widely recognized as among the ten best universities in China. As a part of this agreement, President Merwin created the Institute of Chinese Studies to facilitate academic programming and other linkages between Nankai and FGCU. In June 2006, FGCU signed a similar university partnership agreement with Yantai Univerisity located in Yantai, China. In addition to the university partnership, delegates from the City of Yantai traveled to Southwest Florida to sign a "Sister City" business and cultural agreement with representatives of Southwest Florida business and government.
