The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes have recently undergone an overhaul. NAICS was developed jointly by the US, Canada, and Mexico to provide new comparability in statistics about business activity across North America and recently replaced the old US Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) System. Substantial revisions in NAICS, within the Construction and Wholesale Trade sectors and a number of revisions for the Retail and Information sectors, have recently been made. The official 2002 version U S NAICS Manual includes more new codes now, thanks to the input from Small Businesses during the 2000 census and from Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (PTACs) from across the country. It will be officially implemented in the 2002 Economic Census.
The new manual, in its entirety, is located on-line at the following web site: https://eweb1.sba.gov/naics/dsp_naicssearch2.cfm and is searchable by key words, SIC codes, and NAICS codes. Each business doing business with the government should perform a new search to find their new codes. Due to the merger, those registered in the SBA site, Pro-net (located at http://pro-net.sba.gov), will want to add their new codes to their business profile in CCR instead. You may visit the same Pro-net site to access CCR for updating your codes. (If you are certified as an 8(a) company, contact your SBA Business Opportunities Specialist (BOS) first.) Keep your codes current in the Central Contractors Registry (CCR) as well, so those contracting agents can find you.
A new North American Product Classification System (NAPCS) is presently under development. It will focus on products of Service Industries now, and on Manufacturing of products at a later date. A numerical listing for existing census codes is available at: http://www.census.gov/prod/ec97/97numlist/97numlist.html. If you need assistance in updating your Pro-net profile or in performing a thorough search, contact your local PTAC, Sharon O'Hara at 239-225-4218.
