Entrepreneurial Opportunities in Southwest Florida

Charles Anderson
District Director, U.S. Small Business Administration

As District Director for the U.S. Small Business Administration's (SBA) South Florida Office, Charles Anderson is responsible for all of the Agency's programs in the 24 counties located in central, southwest, and southeast Florida. The South Florida district has a total population of approximately 12 million people and 262,000 small businesses.

The SBA District Office assists small businesses in the areas of financial assistance, business development, procurement assistance and advocacy. The district office's loan portfolio exceeds 7,600 loans totaling more than $700 million. Mr. Anderson also has oversight responsibilities for 15 chapters of the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), Small Business Development Centers located at Florida International University, Florida Atlantic University, The University of South Florida, Florida Gulf Coast University, and Brevard Community College with 12 locations throughout South Florida, and a Women's Business Development Center located at Florida International University.

On a national level, the SBA guaranteed over 52,000 loans totaling $10 billion to America's small businesses in 1996. In addition, the SBA provided more than 38,000 loans totaling $987 million to disaster victims for residential, personal property, and business losses in fiscal year 1996. The SBA's management and technical assistance programs benefit hundreds of thousands of businesses each year and is an integral part of the entrepreneurial efforts of our economic region.


Carol P. Conway

Carol P. Conway was selected as one of four national Blue Chip Enterprise Initiative award winners in February of 1997. The Blue Chip Enterprise Initiative, sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Mass Mutual and Nation's Business magazine, recognizes companies that have demonstrated entrepreneurial excellence. Mrs. Conway has 20 years of experience in the computer industry and is President of Computer Rescue Squad of Cape Coral, Florida. A graduate of the University of New Mexico, she held marketing and management positions in Northern California's Silicon Valley, including nine years with IBM. She participates in civic projects with organizations including Florida Gulf Coast University, the National Association of Women Business Owners, and the Chamber of Southwest Florida.


Frank R. D'Alessandro

Frank R. D'Alessandro is founder and President of the Commercial Real Estate Group, Frank D'Alessandro, Inc., of Fort Myers, Florida. Mr. D'Alessandro has 20 years of experience in real estate, with clients including Westinghouse Communities, SunTrust, Wal-Mart, Resolution Trust Corporation, and Barnett Bank. He currently serves as Chairman of the Lee County Horizon Council, which is the Economic Advisory Board to the Board of County Commissioners. He is Past President of the Real Estate Investment Society, a Board of Director for the Certified Commercial Investment Members Southwest Florida Chapter, and a Board of Director {or SouthTrust Bank.

Reinhold Schmieding is President of Arthrex, Inc., a company he founded in 1981, which provides the finest quality products and educational services to meet the special needs of orthopedic surgeons. The Arthrex Arthroscopic Learning Center at the corporate headquarters in Naples, Florida, offers orthopedic surgeons a unique educational experience afforded by its new, state-of-the-art facilities and educational programs using the latest techniques, instruments and equipment. New product ideas and improvements are also engineered and produced in this facility. In addition to its Center in Naples, Arthrex has Regional Learning Centers in California, Germany and Korea.
