Joseph R. Hardiman, Former President. Chief Executive Officer and Member of the Board of Directors, National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc. and its wholly owned subsidiary The Nasdaq Stock Market. Inc, September 1987 - January 1997

Trained as a lawyer with BA and LLB degrees from the University of Maryland, Mr. Hardiman engaged in the practice of general corporate and securities law in Baltimore form 1963 until 1968 when he joined the securities firm of Robert Garrett & Sons, Inc. with whom he was associated as an Executive Vice President and a Director until he joined Alex. Brown & Sons in 1975. He became a General Partner of Alex. Brown in 1976 and, on its incorporation, a Managing Director, Chief Operating Officer and member of the Board of Directors until September 1987.

Mr. Hardiman serves on the Boards of Corvis Corporation, Intellectual Development Systems, Inc.; the Flag Investors Funds; the ISI Funds; the Nevis Fund; Wit Soundview Group, Inc.; Corporate Management Solutions, Inc.; the University of Maryland Foundation; the University of Maryland School of Law; and the Nasdaq Stock Market Educational Foundation. Previously, he served on the Boards of the Depository Trust Company; the Securities Industry Foundation for Economic Education; the Securities Regulation Institute; the Center for the Study of the Presidency; and as a member of the American Business Conference.

Prior civic activities included numerous volunteer positions in Baltimore among which were Chairman of the Fund for Educational Excellence; Trustee of St. Paul's School for Girls; Trustee of the Baltimore Museum of Art; and Director of the University of Maryland Medical Systems.

In 1994, Mr. Hardiman was the recipient of the President's Award for the Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Maryland at College Park and in 1991 the Securities Industry Association's Travers J. Bell Memorial Award of Distinction.

 

Richard T. Becherer, Clarence E. Harris Chair of Excellence in Business and Entrepreneurship, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

Dr. Becherer has had extensive experience both as an academic Marketing Professor and as an entrepreneur. He co-founded one of the first for-profit Health Maintenance Organizations in the United States. That company, Independence Health Plan, Inc., became a public company in 1984. Dr. Becherer also became involved in several other business start-ups, including a marine business and a plastic injection molding business.

Dr. Richard Becherer received his doctorate degree from the University of Kentucky and primarily teaches entrepreneurship and marketing courses. He has published numerous journal articles including Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Marketing, and Decision Sciences. In 1993 he was awarded the Coleman Foundation Award for the best research paper at the 1992 University of Illinois-Chicago American Marketing Association Research Symposium on Marketing and Entrepreneurship. In 1998, Dr. Becherer received the Edwin M. Appel Prize presented each year at the Price/Babson College Fellows Program to an individual who "embodies the spirit of entrepreneurship and imparts it to others".

 

James Howard Finch, Allco Corporation Chair In Financial Management and Planning, Florida Gulf Coast University

Dr. Howard Finch is an expert in financial decision-making, and has extensive experience in the working world of business, where he spent five years working in the private sector prior to starting his academic career. His background ranges across the disciplinary boundaries of finance, accounting and economics. Prior to coming to Florida Gulf Coast University, Dr. Finch spent nine years on the faculty of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he held the J. C. Bradford Professorship in Portfolio Management and was Executive Director of MBA Programs. He holds a B.B.A. in Economics and Finance from North Georgia College and State University, an M.B.A. from Mercer University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Finance from The University of Alabama.

Dr. Finch teaches in the areas of investments, portfolio management, and financial management at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has received several teaching awards during his career, and continues to enjoy the challenge of making money management relevant and understandable to students of all ages.

Over the last decade, Dr. Finch has published numerous articles in both scholarly and practitioner journals on various aspects of financial decision-making including asset valuation, capital budgeting and real estate finance. He has co-authored articles in publications including Financial Services Review, Internal Auditing, Bank Accounting and Finance, Managerial Finance, The Bankers Magazine, Journal of Services Marketing, The Journal of Economics and Finance, Real Estate Finance, and The Appraisal Journal. He has served for several years on the academic review panel for The Appraisal Journal, as well as technical reviewer for several textbooks.
