Florida Gulf Coast University Offers Course for Healthcare Providers in Port Charlotte
4/6/2001

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University College of Health Professions is offering a six-week course for healthcare providers "Assessment of Older Adults" from 9 a.m. to noon, on Fridays, May 14 to June 22, at the Royal Palm Activities Room in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Healthcare providers in advanced practice and other healthcare providers in primary and long-term care of older adults will receive current information for incorporating functional assessment into care for older adults.

Geriatric assessment often provides a useful starting point in determining appropriate diagnoses and treatment approaches for older adult clients. As healthcare providers work with an increasingly aging population with complex health problems, benefits of this practical approach to assessment and care are being recognized. This course is designed to provide an overview of the concept of functional assessment for frail older adults and to assist healthcare providers in applying this strategy in practice.

Instructors are Dr. Linda Buettner, associate professor, FGCU College of Health Professions, and Suzanne Fitzsimmons, Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, M.S., research associate, FGCU College of Health Professions. As an accredited comprehensive public university, FGCU addresses the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and provides a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities for the general public, such as offering this course for healthcare providers.

A continuing education certificate can be earned by completing a post-test with a score of 70 percent or better. The fee is $15 per contact hour. To register contact Tony Burkett, FGCU Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, at (941) 590-7500 or e-mail at: tburkett@fgcu.edu

This course is one of many offered as part of Florida Gulf Coast University's responsibility to make courses and programs conveniently available to all citizens in the five county service area of Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee counties.
