FGCU Commencement
4/27/2001

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University will graduate 280 students at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, May 5, 2001 at TECO Arena. Eighteen of the graduates at the sixth commencement exercises are the first to complete all four years at FGCU, Florida’s newest University. They are the “Inaugural Freshman Class of 1997.”

Congressman Porter Goss will give the commencement address. Goss, a Sanibel resident, has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1988 and is serving his third term as chairman of the House Select Committee on Intelligence.

FGCU President William C. Merwin will confer degrees and present diplomas assisted by Brad Bartel, Provost & Vice President, Dean Carolyn Gray, College of Arts and Sciences, Dean Richard Pegnetter, College of Business, Dean Lawrence Byrnes, College of Education, Dean Cecelia Rokusek, College of Health Professions, Dean John McGaha, College of Professional Studies, Dean W. Jack Crocker, Graduate Studies & Continual Learning, and Dean Wm. Gregory Sawyer, Division of Student Services.

Representing the Class of 2001 as student speakers are Toni Rice, President, Student Government Association and Jorge Lopez, Vice President, Student Government Association. Both speakers are receiving their Bachelor’s degrees in Business.
