FGCU Names Tollett First Baseball Coach
7/20/2001

FORT MYERS, FL – FORT MYERS, FL – Today, Florida Gulf Coast University named David Tollett as the University’s first baseball coach. Formerly the head baseball coach at Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda, Fla., Tollett will begin his duties at FGCU on August 15. Intercollegiate baseball play will begin at FGCU in fall 2002.
“Dave is one of the most energetic, hard working baseball coaches that I have met,” FGCU Athletics Director Carl McAloose said. “For nearly 15 years Dave has been instrumental in developing baseball talent in Southwest Florida. We are fortunate to have a coach that can hit the ground running and use his contacts to help FGCU create a nationally respected program. Dave’s last four teams at CHS had a grade point average of 3.67, so we know that he promotes excellence in the classroom as well as on the field.”
Tollett has been the head baseball coach at CHS since 1991. He was named District 16 Coach of the Year in six of the last seven seasons. Tollett has developed 12 Division I student-athletes in his tenure at CHS. Prior to his head coaching duties, he was the junior varsity coach at CHS from 1988-1990.
Since 1999, Tollett has been the director of coaching for the Southwest Florida Eagles, a developmental team that has turned out 24 Division I athletes. Nine times Tollett has been the Coach of the Southwest Florida All-Star Team. He became the Florida Athletic Coaches Association regional chairman this year.
“When Florida Gulf Coast University opened, I set my sights on being a participant in the growth of the newest learning institution in the country and now I will get my chance,” said Tollett. “This is a promising area filled with talented student-athletes being taught the game by tremendous coaches. I look forward to a long relationship with all the local and regional high schools. I am excited about the opportunity for students that FGCU brings to Southwest Florida and anticipate a busy year being a part of making these opportunities a reality for our future student-athletes.”
Tollett is a 1988 graduate of Tusculum College. He and his wife, Wendy, are parents of three year old twins, Caleb and McKenna.
As an accredited comprehensive public university, FGCU addresses the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and provides a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities for the public. Only four years old, FGCU opened its doors to students for the first time in 1997. FGCU currently sponsors men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s golf. Men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball will begin intercollegiate play in fall 2002.
