Press Release

Statement by FGCU Library Services Director Kathy Hoeth

I would like to express my deepest apologies for the decision I made to ask staff of the University Library to not wear one of the stickers they had designed expressing their patriotism for our country. It was a bad decision on my part, and I have seen and heard first hand today the pain it caused members of the community and the FGCU family of students, faculty and staff. My motivation was to provide a Library atmosphere of tolerance and respect for the University’s diverse population that represents more than 50 international countries, but the judgment was bad, and I regret the action. I also regret not consulting with the University president or provost on my unilateral decision that in no way reflects the views of Florida Gulf Coast University.

I lived in New York for the first 31 years of my life, and like all Americans, I have felt deeply the tragedy that touched not only New York but all of the United States. I am proud of the heroism and bravery that has characterized our country since these tragic events transpired, and I am sorry that my actions appeared contrary to this and caused anguish to anyone.
