FGCU Athletics Makes History on Oct. 23
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University Athletics wants to win big and it will on Tuesday, Oct. 23 when it hosts a Recognition Breakfast, breaks ground on the upcoming FGCU sports complex, and unveils the new official FGCU athletic logo all in one day.
FGCU President William C. Merwin, Director of Athletics Carl McAloose and all of FGCU’s athletic coaches invite the media to attend a Breakfast and Recognition Program to say “thank you” to several key community supporters and to the many student-athletes who have chosen to make FGCU their alma mater. The breakfast and program begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Whitaker Hall Sprint Room.
A number of people in the community chose to support FGCU Athletics before the University participated in its first event and during the first year of competition, and members of the media have done an outstanding job of covering FGCU programs and coaching searches. The luncheon is to recognize and thank those people who have helped establish a great start for FGCU Athletics.
At 10 a.m., FGCU officials will move to athletics’ temporary offices next, to student housing, to break ground on what will eventually be the University’s sports complex and athletics’ permanent home. The complex will include a teaching gymnasium, natatorium, wellness center, baseball and softball facilities, and administrative offices. FGCU currently has 12 lighted tennis courts, intramural and recreational fields, sand volleyball courts, and outdoor basketball courts. Later plans include additional facilities for soccer, an outdoor track and field area, and a cross-country course.
Immediately following the groundbreaking, FGCU will unveil the University’s new official athletic logo.
