11/30/2001
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University is recruiting an individual to serve at FGCU under an Americorps VISTA grant to help with FGCU’s community tutoring partnership, which places trained tutors in K-3 classrooms at elementary schools in the FGCU service area. Preference is for someone with a baccalaureate degree and an educational background. Application deadline is mid-December.
The tutoring partnership “Circle of FRIENDS (Floridians Reading: Initiating Exciting New Dreams of Success)” currently has 25 FGCU students who serve as tutors. The students provided more than 300 hours of tutoring service since mid-September. The VISTA member recruits, trains and places the volunteer tutors. Plans include recruiting and placing community volunteers as well.
The three-year Americorps VISTA grant is part of the Florida Alliance for Student Service (FASS) VISTA Initiative. VISTA members serve one-year terms, receive stipends and receive educational grants for their services. FGCU is recruiting an individual for January placement and the successful applicant will receive expense-paid VISTA training.
