FGCU Names Heinemann Dean of College of Health Professions

FORT MYERS, FL -Florida Gulf Coast University announces associate professor Denise Heinemann, Dr.PH, RN, has been promoted recently to the position of dean of the College of Health Professions.

Heinemann began at FGCU as a member of the nursing faculty in 1997 after completing eight years with the University of South Florida. During her time at FGCU, she served one year as interim dean of the college. Her University service includes several committee chair and member appointments.

“Dr. Heinemann has all of the administrative skill sets to lead the College of Health Professions,” provost and vice president for Academic Affairs Brad Bartel said. “We have a full agenda of programmatic and research goals for the College. She is the ideal person to work with the faculty on accomplishing these goals.”

Heinemann’s areas of professional expertise include community health services, outcomes in nursing research, ethics in nursing and health care, care strategies for Alzheimer’s and related dementia, and curriculum development.

Heinemann earned a Doctor of Public Health in 1982 from the Yale School of Medicine, a Master of Education in 1967 from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1963 from Cornell University. She has completed post-doctoral work at the University of Florida and the Kennedy Institute at Georgetown University.

Among several of her awards, FGCU honored Heinemann in 1999 with the Outstanding Administrator Award. She serves currently on several national review panels and editorial boards. She has also designed multiple online courses and made numerous conference presentations and speeches. In 1997, students established an undergraduate nursing scholarship in her name at FGCU.

She co-authored Nursing Documentation: Charting, recording and reporting in 1994 in addition to 10 articles published in refereed professional journals between 1983 and 1997.

Heinemann is a founding member and past president and treasurer of the Florida Nurses Association District 29, and has served in several elected positions with the Florida League for Nursing.

Nationally, she is a member of the American Nurses Association, the American Public Health Association and the National League for Nursing, where she serves as a site evaluator for the NLN Accrediting Commission. Heinemann is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the international honor society in nursing and a Virginia Henderson Fellow.

Heinemann’s service to the local community includes her work as a member of the Board of Directors of Shady Rest Care Pavilion, the HealthPark Ethics Consultation Group and the Nursing Excellence Committee for FNA District 29.
