McKee Names Assistant Baseball Coach
9/16/2002

FORT MYERS, FL - This week, Florida Gulf Coast University hired Steve McKee as FGCU’s first assistant baseball coach under head coach Dave Tollett.

McKee, 33, is a graduate of Florida State University. Before attending FSU, McKee played two years at Andrew College in Cuthbert, Ga., where he was a second and third basemen. During his sophomore year, McKee helped lead the Fighting Tigers to the junior college playoffs.

McKee began his coaching career at his alma mater, Boca Ciega High School, as an assistant from 1995-1997. During the 1996 season, the Pirates won the South County Championship.

McKee became a head coach in 1998, where he led Clearwater High School to a Final Four appearance in 2001. The following year, McKee’s Clearwater squad advanced to the Sweet 16 for Class 5A.

In 2001, the Florida Junior Olympics selected McKee as the pitching coach for Team USA where he helped lead the team to a perfect 10-0 record to win the gold medal.

McKee is optimistic about being hired by Tollett and becoming a part of the FGCU baseball program.

“I’m very excited to be a part of a new program and to have a chance to work with Coach Tollett. It will be a great opportunity to help build this program,” McKee said. “The talent is so rich in this state and I’m excited to get out there and bring quality student-athletes to FGCU.”

McKee and his wife, Lisa, have two children, Zach, 3, and Jake, 1.
